You get a cute little sound from your phone, you rush over, you check your dashboard, oh oh oh a review! Your heart races, your palms are sweaty, you open it up, and your happy feeling falls way to a gut wrenching pit in your stomach. 1 star. Yes, the dreaded one star review, with a nasty comment that stated your item was awful and it was thrown in the trash.
Yes, this happened. As a new shop, and only a few 5 stars, I got the dreaded one star review. I was hurt, I was angry, I wanted to scream at this person across the country, how could you?? This person never emailed me, never contacted me, never once reached out to tell me he/she was unhappy. Yes, this happens and it is the worst feeling in the world. Every time I made a new sign I was terrified, would it happen again, would I get closed down? ( Ok, I do get a little dramatic) But my confidence was shattered. Then I got another one. Holy smokes, I was ready to close down the shop for good. Mind you, I had 5 stars all in between with very nice comments, in fact, the 5 star came just before the one star on the same item!! So, I did what seemed like the logical thing to do and had a nice big dirty martini. Luckily my husband is the calm voice of reason in our relationship and talked me off the edge ( did I mention I get a little dramatic?). We sat and looked at our product and discussed what we thought we could do to improve it and avoid this in the future. We compared regular pine wood to select pine wood, and while the select is more money, the quality is better and there are no knots and it has a smoother grain. To do any image transfer well, the grain has to be smooth or it will not work right, and wood is too expensive to screw up. We decided we had enough of a profit margin to go with the more expensive wood. We then decided to take a picture of every sign we made and send it to the customer prior to shipping and told them that this was the exact sign they were getting and to let us know if there was a problem with what they saw. Fingers and toes crossed, we have not had any more issues since we implemented these changes. While I still get nervous seeing that I got a review ( I just feel like I am going to the principal's office for some reason), I know that I have done what I could to make sure everyone is happy. So, when you get that review, take a deep breath and see if there maybe is something you can do to make things just a little better. Dawn
